Story details
Sitges joins the 48H Open House Architecture Festival for the fourth consecutive year with a choice of different open houses to learn about the town’s historical heritage. This year there are 10 public and private buildings that can be visited in Sitges to highlight their architecture: l’Escorxador, the sculptor Pere Jou’s workshop, the Ave Maria Foundation, the Palau del Rei Moro, the Santiago Rusiñol Library (Casa Miquel Utrillo), the Stämpfli Foundation, el Mercat Vell, Hotel Casa Vilella, Hotel Romàntic and Can Milà (Visitor Service Centre). All are open spaces and no prior registration is required.
As part of the overall offer, a visit to the Terramar Raceway is included, which belongs to the municipality of Sant Pere de Ribes. Although it is located in this locality, it was built in 1923, in the development of the garden city project of Terramar, in Sitges, promoted by Francesc Armengol. To participate in this visit, prior registration is required through the festival’s website .
The event, which is fun, free and open to everyone, will focus this year on the exploration of seven fundamental characteristics when designing and enjoying a space: light, solidity, location, orientation, functionality, beauty and comfort. The organisers of the contest suggest that people ask themselves how they want to live and what is important to them in a built space.
The contest in 6 cities
Currently, the 48h Open House Architecture Festival is held simultaneously in 6 cities: Barcelona, Sitges, L’Hospitalet de Llobregat, Badalona, Sant Joan Despí and Vilassar de Dalt to offer the public guided tours of architectural spaces of interest. In the 2024 edition, a total of more than 200 buildings will be opened and 212 activities will be offered.
This event began in Barcelona in 2010, but over the years it has also spread to other cities in the metropolitan region: in Santa Coloma de Gramenet (since 2013), in Vilassar de Dalt (since 2014), in Sant Joan Despí (since 2015), in Badalona (since 2016), in L’Hospitalet de Llobregat (since 2017) and in Sitges (since 2021).
