Three iconic establishments that line the seafront in Sitges are about to find out whether they have to close forever.
Kansas, Pic-Nic and Club de Mar were all ordered to close following the law passed in Madrid in 2018, which estabished that all areas in Spain within a certain distance from the seashore had to come back into the public domain and could not be built on. All three contested the ruling independently, and will soon hear from the supreme court whether they have been successful. Their latest argument, which stated that their exact positioning could be considered part of the street and not part of the seashore, had given them hope…but they will soon discover whether it was in vain.
Although the three buildings are listed as having cultural and historical significance, this has not stopped establishments in other towns from being forced to close after decades of business activities.
If they are forced to close, it will certainly change the seafront in Sitges, which has featured these buildings since at least the 1950s.
As of 10th January 2025, the result is expected any moment….
