Story details
Terramar park has this week established a new shelter where various insects can make their nests and hibernate. This facility is known as an ‘Insect Hotel’ and is suitable for various species of beneficial insects, such as bees, ladybirds and lacewings. Insect hotels help promote biodiversity and biological pest control in gardens and agricultural fields. Therefore this installation will contribute to the conservation of species threatened by habitat loss.
These structures for insects are made of natural materials such as wood, bamboo, straw and leaves. The shelter installed at Jardins de Terramar is 125 cm high, 60 cm wide and 20 cm deep and weighs 41 kilos.
Sitges City Council’s plan is to install 4 more insect hotels, of a smaller size, which will be distributed between Can Milà and the conservation area of the main Promenade.
This action is part of the work plan of the Environmental Action council to enhance biodiversity in the urban green spaces of Sitges
