Story details
Corpus de Sitges celebrated its main events this last weekend, filling the streets of the town with people eager to see the 31 floral mosaics, in addition to the Dancing Egg at the Palau de Maricel , the decorated Patio Blau, Carrer Davallada decorated by the Commission, and the various spaces with flowers on facades, balconies and windows. The heavy rain on Saturday night only managed to postpone the painting of some of the streets for a few hours.
Throughout the day on Sunday, however, the weather cooperated, and in the morning the planned 31 sections of streets were completed. Once again, great neighborhood participation and collaboration between generations were evident as key characteristics of the Corpus de Sitges. This participative element is one of the key qualities of a celebration declared by the Generalitat as a Heritage Festival of National Interest.
Another of the great elements that gives Corpus de Sitges this maximum recognition from the Generalitat is the maintenance of the tradition whereby after the carpets are made, the evening procession walks over them. The three pairs of giants, the Dragon and the Eagle with flowers in their mouths, and the Moixiganga, were the first elements of the entourage of the Corpus Christi procession, which ended with Joan Hernández with the Minerva penon and the rector of Sitges, Fr. Rafel Vilaplana.
The procession stopped at Cap de la Vila to see the mosaic made by Sitges’ Hospital de Sant Joan Baptista, which this year celebrates the 700th anniversary of its founding. The design of the mosaic (pictured) included some of the most iconic elements of the Hospital, such as the dome of the building and some vines. The president of the Corpus Commission, Eduard Tomàs, proclaimed that “the Cap de la Vila mosaic will be remembered for many years” and added that “the new locations have been a success, both the use of the Jardins de l’Hospital for the exhibition of carnations, and the Pregó al Racó de la Calma”. The president of the commission also thanked the neighborhood for its great organization in makng all the carpets at the same time, since Sunday morning: “Normally, some carpets are finished the night before, but this time the rain meant that everyone worked practically at the same time, with the logistical difficulties that this entails, but that were resolved briliantly”.
The thousands of people who visited Sitges on Sunday were able to see the high quality of the materials used in the 31 mosaics, with very good quality flowers that arrived in Sitges in very good condition. Once the procession returned to the church, the three pairs of giants performed the final dance in the Town Hall Square, which also hosted the Corpus Christi refreshment, which consisted of melindros, horchata and lemonade, offered by the City Council to all citizens.
Next weekend is reserved for the opening of the 8th Corpus Instagram Photo Contest, Friday at 7.30pm at Janio’s Bar; plus the visit of the jury of the XLIV Contest to facades, balconies and windows through the streets of the own centre. On Sunday the party will end with the closing ceremony in the Gardens of the Hospital de Sant Joan Baptista, from 7.30 p.m., with the presentation of prizes.
