Superb menu fin de semana at Clares on Carrer Jesús today. The brunch is always great and the lunch menu is varied using good quality ingredients. 😋
If you are looking to eat authentic Catalan/Spanish food with the locals, then this is the spot. To be honest, it is more Spanish than Catalan, but who cares when it’s so good! Gorgeous inside decor too. 😍
Menu included wine and coffee, but we were delighted to be offered a couple of hierbas chupito’s as well! 😜
Had a pleasant enough weekend menu del dia at Clares. The decor inside is really nice, and it was full with the happy buzz of diners. As is often the case in Spain, the most exquisite dishes were the starters. My companion had stuffed cabbage leaf with beef, tomato and glass noodles, which was inventive and delicious. I had a well made and tasty Xató, with pleasing quantities of fresh fish included.
The mains were good, although nothing like as inventive as the starters, just lamb chops and fricando, competently cooked and accompanied by home made fries.
My companion particularly enjoyed her dessert; a brownie with ice cream. Moreover it was, happily, a warm brownie, with just the right amount of liquid in the centre, not the hideously dry and crumbly version sometimes present in Sitges.
What tarnished the experience for me, unfortunately, was the evident wish of our server to move us out quickly, as they were clearly anticipating a busy lunch period. We had arrived at 1pm, 30 mins before our booking time, and had eaten at a normal pace. Even so, we were asked if we had finished half way through our main course. When we said no, we were presented with the dessert menu, unceremoniously placed open, standing up against the window, and with an encouragement to get choosing. I understand restaurants need to keep people moving through, but I think they need to disguise the ‘can you hurry up’ vibe a little more carefully. For one thing, I like to eat my main course and chat with my companion unpressured, without being asked to look at the dessert menu until we have finished.
All in all though, I would go back, just maybe on a week day!
At Clare’s we had excellent food, and there was excellent ambience. The service was also excellent, the decor is excellent and the staff are the sweetest!
