Story details
A mobile blood donation unit from the Blood and Tissue Bank will stop on Wednesday, June 26 in Can Robert park car park, from 5pm to 9 p.m. Any healthy person between the ages of 18 and 70 who weighs more than 50 kilos can approach the bus to donate and thus help maintain the Bank’s blood reserves. The aim of this campaign, which runs throughout Catalonia, is to help meet the blood and tissue needs of patients in Catalan hospitals.
The Blood and Tissue Bank organizes other campaigns to raise awareness of the importance of donating blood, such as the construction of the first digital ‘castell’ created thanks to the collaboration of all the people who have donated during the first six months of year. The initiative began with the Catalonia Blood Donation Marathon on January 11 and has lasted until today, World Blood Donor Day. This virtual project aims to use the Catalan castellers as the symbol of the collective effort of donating blood, and the cohesion and connection that this gesture implies between donors and recipients. The structure has already materialized digitally, thanks to the more than 128,000 donations received to date. To view the first augmented reality ‘castell’ ever made, you can access the website https://donarsang.gencat.cat/escultura-digital/ca/ via mobile (and you must be physically located in one of the following places):
Barcelona: Plaza Catalunya
Lleida: Plaça de la Paeria
Girona: Plaça del Vi
Tarragona: Plaza de la Font
Sitges has collaborated in this via the donations of Sitges residents, specifically 329 between January and May. 987 patients have benefited from these donations.
Donating blood is an essential act to guarantee health care in hospitals and clinics, so that they can carry out surgical interventions, oncological treatments, organ transplants and assist any patient who requires a transfusion. The bank needs 1,000 donations a day, as platelets expire after five days.
People interested in donating can pre-book an appointment at the Blood and Tissue Bank website by filling out this form . They can also go directly to the coach on the day of the campaign.
