Event Description
The Grape Harvest Festival celebrates its 64th edition this year on October 3rd, 4th and 5th, with an extensive programme full of activities to remember and honour the ancient tradition of the grape harvest in Sitges. The festival, organized by Foment de Sitges with the support of the City Council’s Tourism Department and the sponsorship of the Familia Torres, aims to promote the culture of wine and local gastronomy through events that will take place mainly on the Passeig de la Ribera and the Plaça de la Fragata.
The celebration will start on Friday afternoon with the Wine Show, which will bring together around ten exhibitors from wineries and the field of gastronomy. It will be located on Passeig de la Ribera from 7 to 11 p.m., offering attendees the first opportunity to taste the wines on display.
On Saturday, the day will begin with the inauguration of the Torres & Earth Space, followed by the opening of the Wine Show. Throughout the day, visitors will also be able to enjoy the show in Plaça de la Fragata and the day will culminate with the traditional Harvest Proclamation, by Jordi Cubillos i Almiñana, in Racó de la Calma, at 7:30 p.m.
The most traditional events will be held on Sunday. At 10:15 a.m., in Plaça del Baluard, the pressing of the first grapes will take place, followed by the offering to the church of Sant Bartomeu and Santa Tecla. The Wine Show will continue in Plaça de la Fragata from 12:00 to 15:30 and from 17:00 to 21:00. At 12:30 p.m., the 46th Grape Treaders Competition will take place, one of the highlights of the programme. More than 60 representatives of different local entities will recreate the historical tradition of the harvest, pressing the grapes with their feet to extract the must (unfermented juice). This festive and symbolic activity allows you to connect with Sitges’ wine-growing roots, celebrate local culture and highlight the importance of wine and vineyards within the town’s heritage.
Afterwards, the weighing/balancing of the Pubilla and the Hereu de Sitges* with their equivalent in wine will take place, in an event that combines partying and local symbolism. The day will end with the singing of habaneras by the Grup Xató, at 7 p.m., accompanied by the traditional Cremat with Brandy Torres 10.
With this programme, Sitges invites residents and visitors to enjoy a festival that has been celebrated continuously since 1961, at the time of year of the first grape harvests in the vineyards. Three intense days to enjoy the culture of wine, discover the winemaking traditions and actively participate in the festive and cultural life of the town.
*The Pubilla and Hereu, respectively, are a young woman and young man, chosen each year to represent the town in various events. They are usually young women and young men who reflect positive values
