Event Description
Sitges Carnival Overview
The Sitges carnival is one of the best carnivals in Europe & one of the top 10 globally. It includes children’s and adults’ processions, each repeated twice, as well as a number of traditional acts and parties across the town (don’t forget the fancy dress bed race, and the percussion procession, which you can find out about by scrolling through the detailed programme below). The carnival queen and infant carnival queen also visit all the schools, kindergartens and retirement homes of the town to ensure the spirit of carnival reaches all areas and age groups.
During the carnival, El Rei Carnestoltes (Carnival King), who represents debauchery, transgression, mockery and revelry, rules over the town, until the fun is eventually spoiled by old Mrs Lent, and Rei Carnestoltes is tried for his sinful behaviour, sentenced to death, and buried. Then, the town goes back to its usual impeccably morally upright behaviour, until next year’s carnival!!
