The Policia Local and Mossos d’Esquadra have joined forces to patrol on Friday and Saturday nights, between ten at night and six in the morning, in Sitges’ central nightlife spots, such as Carrer Primer de Maig , Carrer Parellades and Carrer Sant Pau. The aim of this patrol is to guarantee the safety of the public at night, during the period of the greatest influx of visitors. The patrols are liaising with the entire nightlife community to ensure that Sitges nights run smoothly. It is envisaged that this will also act as a deterrent, since visible patrolling helps deter uncivil behaviour and disturbances.
The City Council of Sitges has a nightlife committee, formed by representatives of the local administration, the security forces and nightlife operators. The purpose of the committee is to monitor the smooth running of the sector. The councilor of Governació, David Martínez, remarked that “the nightlife patrol is one of the actions planned by the committee, which works to implement measures for the continuous improvement of this important sector for our community”. The councilor commented that “the committee allows us to work together with all stakeholders involved to guarantee a balance between nighttime enjoyment and citizen harmony, ensuring the safety and well-being of all, both residents and visitors”. David Martínez said that ” a new meeting of the committee will be convened at the end of the summer to feed back on the patrol and assess new possible measures”.
This initiative joins other measures launched to guarantee public safety, such as the Sitges Alert app, which allows citizens to contact the police in seconds if they find themselves in a risky situation. This same week, Sitges Alert has been updated, with the addition of a button aimed especially at traders, restaurateurs, hoteliers and the nightlife sector. Just by pressing or dragging the button people will be able to alert the police, who will immediately see that it is an establishment that needs help.
