Story details
The Municipal Plenum in May approved a credit modification that will make it possible to improve waste collection in Sitges. The Councilor for the town’s Image and Public Throughways, Cristina Guiu Navarro, explained that “we must adapt the service to the real needs of Sitges today” and added that “in addition to updating these specific services, we continue to appeal to the civil mindedness of Sitges men and women and of the people who visit us to help keep Sitges clean”.
The increase allocated to these waste collections add up to €359,302.88 for the whole of 2024.
In the case of commercial collection (which is done through a door-to-door system), the increase is motivated by the fact that the number of affiliated establishments that are served has expanded over the years and already adds up to a total of 945 tons collected annually, 27% more than the volume of commercial waste that was collected door-to-door in 2018.
Regarding the review of containers, this extension aims to solve the high degree of abandonment of waste and bulky bags outside the containers. To achieve this, half a day is added in the mornings throughout the year. Until now, in the morning there was a team working half-time and now it is a full-time (7 hours), while in the afternoon the team also works full-time.
The collection of bulky items also undergoes a change similar to the review of containers, since it was formerly a service of 3 days a week in the low season and 5 days in the high season and from now on it will be 5 days throughout the year. The data here also supports the need to expand this service, as 230,120 kilos of bulky items were collected in 2023 compared to 172,300 in 2022. Therefore, 34% more kilos were collected. The City Council offers a home collection service by prior appointment .
Finally, the collection of pruning also goes from 3 times a week to 4 times for this 2024, since 214,820 kilos were collected in 2023, 37% more than in 2022, when 157,320 kilos of pruning were collected. People interested in having the City Council pick up their pruning must do so at the home collection service by prior appointment .
