British School of Barcelona Sitges: Approaches to Learning
For our youngest learners:
Our youngest learners from the age of 2 benefit from opportunities to explore and learn in developmentally-appropriate ways through the use of the emergent curriculum.
The curriculum originates from sensitive observations of children at play and in interactions with the environment or each other.
Our nursery school teachers design curricular extensions and further invitations to explore and discover with the EYFS (Early Years Foundation Stage) in mind.
The collaboration between home and school environments assures continuity of learning and the joy of participation in your child’s learning.
At Pre school Level:
Learning through playful curiosity
The Curiosity Approach® is an educational approach to learning that aims to ignite a child’s natural curiosity to explore the world around them.
We use this inquiry approach to learning to empower learners to think critically, to question, to persevere when facing challenges, to be confident, kind and respectful whilst consciously promoting children’s communication and language skills, and physical, personal, social and emotional development
Play and exploration, active learning, flexible spaces, collaboration with families, intentional teaching and provocations according to children’s interests and developmental stages are key aspects of the Curiosity Approach®.
We aim to promote active learning where children are viewed as being confident and capable citizens of the world.
At Primary Level: An inquiry-based approach to learning
Our team of educators have reflected upon global research and outstanding practice in the design of the curriculum.
Taking inspiration from leading educators, past and present; Steiner, Montessori, and Berger, to name but a few, we have crafted a model which takes upon an inquiry-based approach to learning. This enables our students to develop key learning habits during the full course of their education at BSB, which are taught explicitly through our curriculum.
Curriculum areas are interwoven to create specific links and to allow students to dive deeper into their learning, with a real sense of purpose and rigour. Underpinning the inquiry, students will explore concepts, enabling them to grasp a broader understanding of the world.
Teachers track student’s progress very carefully through a range of assessment methodologies and this reflective practice enables for a more tailored approach which enables success for all. This may include additional support or intervention delivered by our highly trained student support team.
The british curriculum is delivered completely in English, with the exception of Spanish and Catalan lessons. Students requiring additional support when joining the school will also receive an additionally designed EAL programme.
