The stretch of Carrer de Francesc Gumà between Carrer de Sant Isidre and Carrer Jesús will be freed from traffic and motorcycle parking from next August 1. This area will be primarily for pedestrians, linking with other highly used pedestrianised streets such as Carrer Jesús.
The loss of 42 motorcycle parking spaces on this stretch of street will be offset by the creation of 130 new spaces that have been generated from the rearrangement of the motorcycle parking lot next to the station, which now can accommodate a total of 260 motorcycles, around a hundred metres away from the eliminated parking lot. In addition, on Avinguda d’Artur Carbonell, 4 blue zone car parking spaces have been transformed into 22 new spaces for motorbikes.
The part of Carrer de Francesc Gumà between Carrer de Sant Isidre and Hort Gran maintains, only, the parking space for loading and unloading, and for people using the hotel and medical services that are provided on this road.
The councilor for Mobility, Jaume Monasterio Miró, explains that “this is an area with a lot of foot traffic as it is a connecting road between the train station and the centre of the town” and adds that “when the students of Escola Pia return to classes in September, they will also now have this as a safe route to school.” For his part, the councilor for Governación, David Martínez, emphasizes that “with the change we increase safety in a space that is widely used by pedestrians”.
This action follows the guidelines set out in the Sitges Mobility Plan and the 2020 – 2025 Mobility Master Plan, which expands pedestrian zones and restricts the circulation of polluting vehicles, for the benefit of sustainable and healthy mobility. The objective of the Plan is to facilitate a mobility that puts people at the centre, with the aim of achieving new ways of moving around town that are less noisy, more respectful of the environment and safer.
