10 day trips with kids near Sitges

Sitges is an incredible place for kids to grow up. There are wonderful schools; great after school activities; and beautiful beaches. It is remarkably safe compared to most of the world; the climate is amongst the best on the planet, with around 300 days of sunshine per year; and while there is a stimulating international atmosphere (with about 30% of the 30,000 year round population coming from elsewhere) local traditions and festivals remain proud and strong. It’s also a wonderful place to visit, even in winter.

But it can still be good to get out of town for a day, even if just to appreciate going home again! And luckily, there are some great places for kids (and their adults) to have fun, within very easy reach of Sitges. Many of these, like Port Aventura, are already well covered all over the web. But here at Sitges for English Speakers, we will focus on what has actually been recommended recently by members of our very active online community. So here is our selection of 10 day trips with kids near Sitges. And you know what? We even added a few extra ones too. Hope you enjoy them!

Vilanova -Miniature Train & Train Museum

Let’s start with our next door neighbour. Vilanova is a wonderful town with fabulous shops and restaurants. It is also a major fishing port, which is reflected in the outstanding seafood. All that may be better enjoyed another time though, because today you are going with the kids! There’s a lovely, expansive beach with some good playparks, but here are two further suggestions:

Miniature Train: This can be found along the Vilanova seafront here (about 20mins walk from the station) and is fun for young children (and their parents). It costs around €1 per person. But it’s only open 1 day a week. The day can vary, but it’s usually on Sundays from 1100-1400 out of high season, and Saturday afternoons in high season. Click the link to check before you go!  Additionally, there’s a great chiringuito almost right next to the train, where you can eat, drink and watch the sea (or the people) year round. You will deserve it after all that hard work on the on the railway!….The kids can run around on the boardwalk too, away from traffic. Call 938 15 95 37 to reserve.

Vilanova Train Museum: This is, appropriately, right next to Vilanova train station, which is just one stop from Sitges. The museum is fun for train aficionados, and is open 10.00-14.30 Tuesday to Sunday, with an additional afternoon schedule on Saturdays: 16.00-19.30 Price: around €6.50 for adults, €5 for kids, free for under 5s. Address: Plaça Eduard Maristany, s/n
08800 Vilanova i la Geltrú (Next to the train station). Tel: 938158491

Here’s another ‘little’ idea for you! Catalunya en Miniatura is an impressive miniature scale model of Catalunya with a mini train ride, plus (on weekends and holidays) additional jungle walk ‘circuits’ for adults & children, and a zipwire. Address: Can Balasch de Baix, s/n, 08629 Torrelles de Llobregat, Barcelona Call: 936 890 960 Price around €20 for the miniature Catalunya & circuits, or €12 without the circuits.

Have a Wild Time with Animals

Small kids love to get personal with different types of wild animals. Here are some great ways to do just this, within easy reach of Sitges:

La Mascota i el Jardi  is a petting zoo where kids can also feed the animals and ride ponies. Prices start from around €7 per person, plus extra to buy feed or pony rides. Address: Carretera Riudoms-Vinyols, T310, 43330 Riudoms, Tarragona Call: 607492910

Travel time from Sitges: 50 mins

Alternatively, you can visit a farm/animal recuperation centre such as Mon La Bassa, where kids can meet donkeys, horses, hogs and other rescue animals. €5 minimum donation 11-13h every sunday, located in El Vendrell

Travel time from Sitges: 25 minutes

If you have young reptile enthusiasts in your midst, a trip to CRARC could be worth your while. Located in Masquefa, this recuperation centre for reptiles and amphibians has a range of turtles, snakes and crocodiles to see. Entrance is free for under 5s, €3 for kids and €5 for adults. They are open to the public on Saturdays from 10-13h and from 16h-20h and on Sundays and holidays from 10-13h.

Time from Sitges: 45mins

PRO TIP: If you are driving to Masquefa, you will only be 15 mins from the visitors’ centre at Simon Coll chocolate factory  (not to mention all the Cava houses which are also in Sant Sadurni, but we’ll save those for a non-kid article!). Children can learn about the evolution of chocolate making; see the actual production line at Simon Coll in action; and, best of all, partake in a chocolate tasting session! Children up to age 8 are free, and tickets are around €6 for everyone else. They do offer tours in English from Mon-Fri at 12pm, although to combine with CRARC (ie at the weekend) you would need to take a weekend tour, which is in Catalan or Spanish.

A Day at the (motor) Races

If you want to go even faster than a zipwire, a great place that’s been recommended by our community is Karting Altafulla. They have a decent circuit with different vehicles for different ages and abilities. Costs are around €13-€25 for 8-10mins depending on the vehicle and age/height of the driver. Children under 1.15m cannot drive, but they can be ‘co-drivers’ in karts driven by someone of at least 15yrs. Children from 1.15m and up to 12yrs old go in karts that reach speeds of 25kmh. However, if they’re a bit taller (1.20m) they graduate to a kart that goes up to 40kmh (max age 14yrs). From 14yrs everyone is an ‘adult’ and can choose between a twin seater (55kmh) or single seater (70kmh). In high season (approx 23rd June 11th Sept) the track opens everyday from 10am. During the rest of the year, it’s open on weekends and holidays from 10am, except for Easter week, when it’s everyday (consult closing hours here ). Call 722 75 68 43. Location is in Altafulla

Another Karting option recomended by our members is Karting Minilandia, which has a junior and senior outdoor track; a saloon type restaurant, a quad track and minigolf. Children can ride accompanied by an adult from the tender age of 1, whilst anyone over 1m20cm tall can ride their own. Their website is a bit chaotic, but you can whatsapp them to check any details. They currently display opening hours as 10h-14h and 16h to 20h on weekdays (closed Wednesdays and Thursdays) and weekends 1030h-2030h. As for pricing, They operate a system whereby you buy tickets for around €1.30 each, and each attraction asks you for a certain number of tickets. Karting, for example, will cost you 7-12 tickets, depending on the Kart, whereas mini golf will cost 6 tickets Address: Autovia de Castelldefels, km 12, 600, 08840 Viladecans Call: 936582320

Time from Sitges: 25mins

What if it’s raining? Try Karting Penedes, in Vilafranca. It’s best to call them on 626008989 to check opening times (the lady speaks some English), as their website information isn’t always reliable. But their karts and the indoor track are great fun. Prices start from around €18 for 10 minutes, and they have packages for groups of friends who want the whole track to themselves, too. Their website currently has opening hours as Tuesday-Thursday 1600-2200, Friday 1600-0100, Saturday 1100-0100 and Sunday/holidays 1100-2200

Time from Sitges: 12mins

Another indoor option is Gené Karting, a spectacular track and located in a shopping mall, so any family member who prefers shopping will not be bored! Prices are around €18 for 10 mins, and opening hours are Mon to Wed: 17h-22h and Thurs to Sun: 11h-22h. Children from aged 3 can ride accompanied by someone 18 or over, whilst children from 6yrs (who are at least 1m28cm) can drive their own kart.

A Trip to Barcelona

OK, you don’t need us to tell you about the big smoke. You already know Tibidabo amusement park, the aquarium, and the zoo.  But here are some suggestions that may be different to what you can find elsewhere:

For a day without technology with little ones, how about getting lost in a traditional maze at Maze/Labrynth D’Horta?  The park’s address is Passeig dels Castanyers, 1, 08035 Barcelona. It’s open every day from 1000-200 from 1st April-31st October, and every day from 1000 to1800 from 1st Nov to 3st March (except Christmas day, which is 1000-1400). Entrance to the maze costs around €2.

Time from Sitges: 45-60mins by car, depending on traffic. A better option may be 1.15hrs by public transport including a 7 min walk from Mundet station in Barcelona

Laberint D'Horta (Maze)

Another non-hectic treat for small children is a ride on the rowing boats in the Parc Ciutadella. You can rent one everyday from 10am til sundown. Prices are €6-€10 for 30mins, depending on how many are in the boat. Address Parc de la Ciutadella, Passeig de Picasso, 21, 08003 Barcelona. The park is a great place for a picnic and of course also home to Barcelona’s zoo.

Nearest metro: Arc de Triomf (6min walk)  Time from Sitges by public transport: around 1hr

For older kids, how about going to see Barça play? There are currently tickets available for at least 10 matches, starting from around €100 per person. Don’t forget they are not in the famous Camp Nou at the moment…they are at the Olympic Stadium. If you don’t want to spend over €100 per person on watching a game, don’t forget Barcelona has another team, called Espanyol. Why not go to watch Espanyol play? They’re currently in the next league down from Barça, which means tickets are considerably cheaper; they start from around €20

If your kids are not fans of football/soccer? How about going to see Barça play basketball, where tickets start at around €35?

All That Too Boring? Go Jump Out of a Plane!

And finally, what if you or your kids are bored by all these suggestions? Here’s an idea that will wake you up: Throw yourselves out of an plane at 4,000 feet! Yes, it is a bit more expensive and further away than our other suggestions, but anyone over 35kg and under 74yrs of age can do a tandem skydive at Skydive Empuriabrava. Prices start at €299 with this well-established school.

Time from Sitges: About 2hrs 15mins.
